Rugby News – September 2023

29 Sep 23

It’s been a hugely positive start to the rugby season for our players, with matches for our U12A, U12B, U13, U14, U15 and 1st XV teams. Read more about the rugby, the players and the scores in our reports below from Mr Gage, Head of Rugby.

Woodbridge U12B vs RHS
A fantastic start to the year for our U12B team. Woodbridge played some great flowing rugby and are really taking what they have learned in games lessons and co-curricular training onto the match pitch. Well done to all involved especially those who were playing their first game of rugby ever.

Woodbridge U12A vs RHS
A hugely positive start to the season for the U12A team, with a hard-fought victory. A dominant first half saw tries from Year 7’s Frank, Charlie and Griff giving a commanding lead. The second half proved far more difficult to manage with RHS coming back strongly, but this provided some excellent learning for the boys standing them in good stead for the season ahead.

Woodbridge U13 vs RHS
The U13 team also had a great start to the year. RHS came out strong scoring some great tries around the outside. Woodbridge managed to stop their big ball carriers by providing some great defence – to get the ball and score themselves! Woodbridge carried on applying what they have been learning in training with some great attacking plays and scores of their own.

Woodbridge U14 vs Fram
The first game of the season for our U14 team ended up being a physical encounter against a good Fram side. Woodbridge had a good first half with some great defence, not conceding a try in the first half, and also featuring some strong running up the middle of the pitch resulting in scoring numerous tries. The second half was a close encounter with both teams scoring well worked tries. Well done on a first victory of the year to all involved with special mentions going to Year 9’s Oliver Y, Liam and Toby for their performances

Woodbridge U15 vs Fram
Strong first half in which our U15 team dominated possession and territory. Unfortunately, only one try could be scored despite numerous overloads and being held up over the line twice. The second half was much more even, and as Fram took confidence from their possession, Woodbridge stepped off their levels and conceded three tries. After some serious words after try three, Woodbridge came out with the same intent as the first half and showed real strength to come back to three tries each. Perhaps consider rephrasing: …to come back to a 3-3 score?

Woodbridge Seniors vs Fram
The 1st XV started the year with a fixture against Framlingham College that was nothing short of end-to-end attack, big tackles and some great running rugby. Woodbridge worked hard to keep Framlingham out and a lucky bounce saw them score the only try of the game. The 1st XV showed great determination to the final whistle taking everything that they had done in training and applying it in this game. A great start to the season.
