Providing an educational community, preparing individuals to play full and effective roles in society, our Primary Enrichment Programme provides an exciting and dynamic mix of topics and skills, appealing to many, intended to bring genuine joy and enjoyment to children as they learn. Primary Enrichment is managed by our Assistant Head Academic, Miss Carretta, and offered free of charge to primary schools in our community. Enabling children to have fun while developing new skills and gaining confidence and experience across various curriculum subjects, our workshops are tailored to suit the age of those attending, boosting interest and learning in STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths).
Exploring a variety of topics, the School has been brimming with local primary school children attending for various workshops, from Computational Thinking and Crime Scene Investigation to Giacometti Sculptures, Music and Design. We’ve shared details of some of those workshops below, as a taste of what you can expect from Primary Enrichment at Woodbridge School.
Computational Thinking
Delving into algorithms, tinkering, debugging and using perseverance, children took part in our Computational Thinking workshop, where they solved logical problems using our School’s very own Micro:bit Robots. Exploring a variety of concepts, keywords and techniques, the day finished with an exciting team challenge!
Art – Giacometti Sculpture
The Art workshop focused on the work of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti and children created elongated human figure sculptures inspired by his work. Discussing the features of the artist’s work, they enjoyed sharing their own interpretations, having used a range of media to sculpt their own versions of Giacometti’s figures, producing some incredible outcomes.
Music Day
Our Music Day saw children learning music in a number of different formats, playing instruments and having great fun in the process. A fun-packed day of learning music from teachers at Woodbridge School, the children’s day concluded with an informal concert performed for their parents, which was nothing short of delightful and fun.
Design Workshop
Our Design Workshop with our Head of Design, Mrs Cracknell, saw the children set about designing and making wooden book ends using a variety of techniques and workshop tools – all under the watchful eye of our teachers and support staff. It was a super opportunity to use tools and machines they hadn’t seen before, and to embed key health and safety considerations.
Photography Studio Masterclass
Children were excited to attend this workshop hosted by our Art department. Looking at digital studio photography and providing the children with the opportunity to use the school’s equipment, they also met and worked with professional photographer, Ruth Leach. Together in groups they were allocated the roles of Concept Lead, Art Director, Stylist and Photographic Director. They were asked to design a picture for a burger advert that made a statement! Discussing and creating a storyboard, they created their concept and planned the shot! Arranging the components of the burger on a frame strung with finishing line against a black backdrop lit with studio flash lighting, they photographed then added mist using water, before spraying ketchup and mustard!
Crime Scene Investigation
Working out who broke into the Woodbridge School labs, children took part in this investigative workshop, solving a crime that involved coding, problem-solving skills, using laboratory techniques and equipment to search and analyse clues left at the crime scene. There were definitely some future detectives attending this workshop!
Robotics and Inventions
Using robotic kits to address a design problem, children built their own contraption in line with a provided brief. With test runs and modifications made, children integrated their knowledge of Physics concepts involving forces, materials and electricity, alongside design and creativity – a great opportunity to develop and improve STEM skills while having lots of fun.
This is just a selection of the Primary Enrichment workshops on offer through our programme, and the learning and fun had by children attending.
