Junior 2 Girls Cricket Round-Up

30 Jun 23

Having played most of the season as successful U12 and U13 teams, our Year 7 and 8 cricketers combined to form Junior 1 and Junior 2 teams for a couple of matches at the end of term.

Our Junior 1 team set the tone, being convincing in their wins against New Hall School and Framlingham College. The Junior 2 team followed suit and impressed with their learning and play.

Woodbridge Junior 2 vs New Hall Cricket Match Report

The first Junior 2 match was a shortened affair against New Hall, played on the Astro. The 100 ball game ended up being quite a nail biter! Woodbridge batted first and put 98 on the board, thanks largely to Year 8 openers, Felicity and Romilly. They got the team off to a flying start, both retiring unbeaten.

Felicity impressed with four boundaries in her innings. In reply, New Hall started slowing, as Year 7’s Taaliah dominated with the new ball. Woodbridge’s bowling was tight but could not capitalise enough on the slow start they forced upon New Hall.

Congratulations to Year 8’s Sukie, who bowled the only maiden over of the match in the middle overs, impressive when New Hall was looking to get on with it. New Hall needed three runs from the final over to win; Taaliah to bowl it with nerves of steel. A sharp run out by wicketkeeper, Year 8’s Emma from the first ball, saw the end of the in form batter.

A dot ball was followed by a no-ball and scores were tied with two balls to go! The field comes in! Dot ball! Last ball, fast and straight, edged high into the air – two players converge but the wicketkeeper claims it! The match is tied! What a game by all involved and so much learned.

Woodbridge Junior 2 vs Fram College Cricket Match Report

Taking confidence from their play under pressure, the final challenge of the season was to host Fram College U13B. Woodbridge again batted first, setting a challenging 132 runs to beat them. Year 7’s Annabelle and Abigail set the team up well to accelerate during the second half of the innings.

Year 7’s Ella was the top scorer, finishing not out, hitting the last ball of the innings for a beautiful straight drive four!

Woodbridge’s bowlers proved to be too strong for the opposition, despite some uncharacteristically wayward bowling at the start, conceding more extras than usual. Achieving five run outs meant Woodbridge stayed on top.

Fram was skittled out for 60 in the 11th over with our bowlers finding their accuracy! Year 7’s Georgia, Charlotte (2), Ella and Taaliah taking wickets.

Special mention to Charlotte who was on a hattrick following an LBW and caught behind. The third one was just not to be.

Well done to the team on a 71-run victory to top off a fun cricket season.
