James wins national RAF competition

26 Feb 21

We have heard from Wing Commander Weston RAFAC, HQ Royal Air Force Air Cadets, the tremendous news that James has placed first equal in the RAF core ASTRA team’s Starchaser ASTRA-Sat competition.

Taking on the challenge alone, and not as a part of a team, he won from an original field of over one hundred RAF air, community and school Cadet units, tying with a four-Cadet team from Oswestry.

Wing Commander Weston commented:

“The competition challenged Cadets to consider how satellites could be used to have a positive impact on the economy, our health or the environment.

“In addition to PowerPoint presentations and documents, the formats of the entries included YouTube videos, drawings, and even a comic and several full websites. The subjects covered areas as diverse as space debris removal, the environment and nature, security, search and rescue, asteroid mining, space ports, mental health and Dyson Spheres.

“Clearly, many of these were extremely well-researched and a huge amount of effort had gone into these entries – it was an absolute pleasure to be able to review each of them. That said, it made it significantly more difficult to decide on the winners and runners up. Congratulations to 1165 (Oswestry) Sqn and Woodbridge School CCF for coming joint first place.”

James’s prize includes the extraordinary honour of having his name engraved on one fin of the Starchaser rocket, when the re-scheduled launch date is confirmed.

Amazing! Is this the closest a pupil from Woodbridge School has ever come to outer space?
