U16s at the Suffolk Round of the England Hockey Competition
Mrs Rix Head of Hockey
Our U16 team, made up of Year 11 and Year 10 players, took part in the Suffolk round of the England Hockey competition last week, to determine qualification positions for the Regionals later this month. The first time playing together, the players produced a perfect match.
Seven minutes in, we were three goals up, with Year 10’s Amelie (2) and Izzy getting on the end of perfect right hand side build up plays, slotting crosses into the goal. Amelie got her hattrick before half time before Year 11’s Eloise finished nicely, after setting up a couple of the goals before.
The second half saw more end-to-end play, with Year 11’s Poppy called upon more regularly in goal and making multiple double saves to keep the clean sheet. Year 11’s Lexi and Liya as outside defenders were excellent at starting our attacks with assertive carrying and distribution. We scored four more goals at regular intervals, the first of these being an amazing deflection at a penalty corner from Year 11’s Aurelia. Year 10’s Georgia saw the route to the D open up at a free hit and took full advantage, driving strong and confidently slotting her goal. Year 11’s Lily F got rewarded with a nice goal, having left every ounce of energy out on the pitch before Year 10’s Eve scored in the last minute. A cracking cup game!
Well done to our co-captains on the day, Year 11’s Lyrah and Millie, who lead the team well and also played outstanding games themselves.
Junior Team Matches
Miss Hinton, Hockey Teacher
Our Junior teams played against Norwich High School for Girls. The Junior 3, Junior 5 and Junior 6 teams won their games, while the Junior 4 team remained unbeaten with a scoreless draw, Year 7’s Najma being the proverbial wall as goalkeeper… thou shall not pass!
Junior 3 Team’s Win
Miss Hinton, Hockey Teacher
A very end to end game that could have gone either way. Woodbridge took the lead with two first half goals from Year 7’s Katherine but Norwich fought back and we struggled to clear the ball out of defence. In the second half, we were more determined to put more pressure on their ball carriers, work harder off the ball and were stronger in our tackles. That was rewarded with more attacking opportunities again which we were able to convert and get back to winning ways.
Well done to Katherine for her two goals on the day and Year 8’s Eleanor and Jemima P also getting on the scoresheet. Player of the Match was our goalkeeper, Year 7’s Kitty .
Year 7’s Emily was the hattrick hero for the Junior 5 team! And deserved Player of the Match, while Year 7’s Elodie scored two for the Junior 6 team on her way to the Player of the Match award. Year 8’s Jemima also scored for the Junior 6 team.
Woodbridge U15s vs RHS
Mrs Rix, Head of Hockey
The U15 teams played against Royal Hospital School. The U15Bs showed resilience to secure a good draw, Year 9’s Georgia scoring with Year 10’s Chloe being the player of the match.
The U15As hosted RHS. This was a big test, also following the cup game in the morning for some of the players. The team played the better hockey but could not score their chances or build up enough pressure on the RHS D, until the end of the game. RHS held strong in the closing minutes. A loss on the day but recognition of many good things done and proper team play, rather than relying on a few individuals.
Woodbridge U14s vs IHS
Mrs Rix, Head of Hockey
The U14A team, made up of Year 9 players. kept their winning streak going with a nice win over Ipswich High School. A top talking point from the game was Amelie M scoring two goals, the first of which was a memorable lifted deflection! Well done to captain Jemima B who was named Player of the Match.
