A full lecture theatre witnessed a thought-provoking debate on Wednesday about the merits and the dangers of encroaching technology. Whilst one was invited to ponder whether the creation of artificial intelligence will be man’s greatest achievement we were also challenged to consider whether it might be our last. Directed by the very capable chair, James Briggs, two teams of historians slugged it out on the topics of jobs, productivity and the economy, health and well-being, and the impact of technology on our security. A vote at the end saw the audience reject the views of Dominic Ellice-Freeman, Tom Jarvis and Daniel Hempstead and favour those of Ellie Kilburn, James Phelan and Chester Wigzell that technology is indeed a threat to our society such that we need to move forward with caution.
