Head’s Commendations – March 2023

Congratulations to Year 8’s Edie, Year 10’s Phoebe, Year 11’s Jonjo, and Year 12’s Polina, Jack, Maggie, Hannah and Oliver who joined Miss Norman for tea and cake this week, receiving their Head’s Commendations.

Year 10’s Phoebe received hers having been approached via WS Art department, as somebody who viewed her work at the ArtSpace exhibition wished to purchase her portrait; she sold it for £50, a super achievement.

After winning a Gold in the Advanced section of the UK Linguistics Olympiad, Year 12’s Oliver received his, recognising his position in the top 5% nationally out of nearly 1,700 competitors, qualifying for the second round. Giving up his place in a sporting 1st team in order to play for the 2nd team due to limited numbers, Year 11’s Jonjo was commended by Miss Norman in recognition of this selfless act, putting others’ need and success above his own personal desires.

Year 8’s Edie was recognised for her dedication and improvement in equestrian skills by the Willberry Wonder Pony Charity. The charity’s main aim is to support vital research into osteosarcoma and to grant equine related wishes to seriously ill people and their families. And finally, Year 12’s Polina received hers for becoming a finalist in the NEU Essay Competition for her entry What are the most likely implications of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia?, and also from Year 12 Jack and Maggie were congratulated for being highly commended for their entries into the same competition; Jack for his essay, What can historians learn from the study of past empires and imperialism? and Maggie for her essay, Can it ever be morally acceptable to sacrifice an innocent person for the greater good?
