Boasting a sixth form with over 400 pupils and an excellent sporting pedigree, Copleston were always going to be tough opponents for our football team, and there were many within the Woodbridge camp who didn’t hold out much hope (including the doubtful coach!)
Missing some key players through injury we felt it was going to be the toughest of tough matches, but we were happily surprised to take the lead early in the first half, through some neat work by Tom and a sharp finish from Mauricio. But every time we scored, Copleston came back at us.
The back four which included Will H, Mark, Seb and Jake, remained resolute and Will G, Archie and Henry were having excellent games in midfield.
We conceded two goals early in the second half and thought that our valiant efforts had run their course, however, Henry slotted one home for his first senior goal after some amazing work from the MVP Tom. It’s fair to say that we were hanging on at the end with Sam performing heroics in goal, we were thankful that the referee didn’t play additional time that’s for sure.
We could not believe what we had achieved – the first time that Woodbridge have progressed in the Area Cup! Everyone walked a little taller around School the next day. Well done to all the boys who played their absolute hearts out.
