Last week, students from Years 10 to 12 who are participating in the drama scholarship and enrichment programme, explored Gary Owen’s Romeo and Julie; a modern love story inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Last Tuesday evening the group gathered alongside Miss Mayes to discuss the play and on Thursday they welcomed external facilitator, Jordana Golbourn into School for a workshop which explored this wonderful piece of contemporary drama!
Year 12’s Lala shares her thoughts on the workshop below.
After performing as Mercutio in the Sixth Form production of Romeo and Juliet in November, reading Romeo and Julie, a modern love story inspired by Romeo and Juliet, and written by Gary Owen, was an enriching experience.
The play explored the brink between childhood and adulthood, and the agency that comes with that change. Jordana Golbourn provided an excellent framework for us as students to fully realise our emotions concerning the plays pressing issues. This allowed us to go on and devise much more diverse and interesting pictures of what the play might look like.
The toolkit of devising techniques Jordana showed us was a game changer, helping to create a flow within our pieces, discussing ideas such as ‘what do we wonder when we read the scene?’ and ‘how do we tell the audience that?’ I absolutely loved it!
