The Abbey U11 A Girls’ Hockey Team went to play in The Brandeston Hall Hockey Tournament on Wednesday 1 October and WON! This is the second year in a row that The Abbey girls have brought back the Trophy. 16 schools took part in the Tournament.
In their group the girls played:
Taverham and won 1 – 0
St Joseph’s School and won 3 – 0
Brandeston Hall and won 1 – 0
This last match in their group was nail-biting because up until the last 30 seconds the score was 0 – 0. The forwards battled hard and Clara Simpson did a superb cross to Jessica Elmer who was waiting by post to strike it in, and suddenly the girls had won their group to go into the quarter finals to play against Beeston Hall.
They won this match and then the semi-finals to go through to the finals against Ipswich School.
In the finals the defence were under great pressure from Ipswich but kept the ball out. The forwards made very good shots at goal, one actually struck the post; Oh so close! We reached full time and with no goals scored went into extra time. Cries from our supporters kept the girls pressing forward , but still we couldn’t score. This meant we had to have penalty shuffles – one on one with the goal keeper.
Excitement mounted as we took our three penalty shuffles, at the end of that we were 2 – 2. We then went into sudden death, our striker ran in and scored! This left it up to Ariane Bilgen our goal keeper to keep the ball out and she did! We had won. The girls, their teachers and their supporters cheered madly.
The Deputy Head of Framlingham College presented the girls with gold medals and the trophy.
